Joanne is a registered architect and partner at Gates_Suter Architects. Her research interests are at multiple scales, and stem from her office projects, including studies in light/ shadow and material, ideas of dwelling and domesticity, social as well as spatial potentials of mixed programs. G_SA received a 2010 Lieutenant Governor’s Merit Award in Architecture for the House, Southern Gulf Islands.
For the past year Joanne has been teaching in the vertical design studio sequence at SALA, and has continued her interests with a studio on collective housing, and one that explores issues of mixed use within the inner city. She is currently a member of the Community Advisory Group for the proposed redevelopment of the Little Mountain housing site.
Joanne graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies, followed by an M.Arch in 1994. Upon graduation, she was the recipient of the Alpha Rho Chi Medal. She interned at several Vancouver offices, including Henriquez and Partners, James Cheng Architects, and Patkau Architects before setting out on her own.
