MASA ADMISSIONS

The Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture is both a post-professional degree, designed for students holding a professional degree in architecture, and a research degree for students holding a related degree and experience relevant to graduate studies in architecture.

The admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies must be satisfied before being considered by the Architecture Program. Recognizing that grading systems differ in various countries, the Faculty of Graduate Studies establishes the minimum academic standard for candidates.

Assessment of applications will be made upon the basis of all aspects of the applicant’s submission. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the application is sufficiently well documented to illustrate academic achievement, professional experience, creative potential and the ability to carry out independent research.

The MASA application is due February 15.

The application package consists oF:

  • online application and fee
  • transcripts from all post secondary education institutions [and translations if required]
  • statement of research proposals and faculty supervisor[s]
  • resume
  • list of publications and memberships in scholarly or professional organizations
  • Three letters of reference
  • portfolio [if appropriate to your chosen area of research]
  • TOEFL score [if applicable]

Transcripts and References
The applicant must send to the Architecture Program two official transcripts from previous post-secondary institutions and three letters of reference, in sealed envelopes, which support the application. If the applicant is currently completing a degree, an acceptance will be conditional on the successful completion of the degree requirements as noted. Forms for reference letters may be found in the website www.grad.ubc.ca. Graduate Record Examination [GRE} results, while not required, may be submitted as additional evidence of scholastic promise and aptitude.

Test of English as a Foreign Language: Applicants from a country where the primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by obtaining a score of at least 100 [1BT], 250 [computer based] in the TOEFL or International English Language Testing Service: A minimum overall band score of 7.0 is required with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component of the academic (NOT general) IELTS test.  A passing score must be received by the office on or before the deadline date for your application to be considered.

If the applicant is applying to the program as a Visiting Student, in addition to the complete package detailed above, the Program requires a “Letter of Permission” from the home institution.

Notification of Acceptance
The full Admissions Committee must review every portion of each and every application before final decisions are made and it is not generally possible to provide an immediate response to enquiries. The Committee works in an effective manner, and generally results will be available by mid March.

Interest in the program far exceeds the Program’s resources and facilities, so places are awarded on a competitive basis. The Program reserves the right to not accept applicants for admission even thought they may meet the entrance requirements.

All documentation submitted becomes the property of the University and will not be returned.
