Tuition Fees for MASA students
The annual tuition fee for Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents is approximately $4,100 per year for the MASA program.

Opportunities Available for All Students

Graduate Student Initiative
The MASA Admissions Committee will allocate the GSI funding as Entrance Scholarships to a small number of incoming graduate students who show excellent academic merit and exceptional promise.  All applicants to the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture program will automatically be considered for any given year’s GSI award; there is no need to submit an application for a GSI award.

Funding may also be awarded to students entering the Master of Architecture program.

Teaching Assistant [TA] or Research Assistant [RA]
A limited number of Teaching and Research Assistantships are available to Architecture students and usually are assigned to upper level Architecture students.

Department Awards and Scholarships
Each year the Architecture program awards approximately $82,000 for incoming and returning students. These awards are distributed by the faculty, and all students are automatically considered.

Wolfgang Gerson Memorial Scholarship in Architecture
For meritorious students who have completed one term in the MASA program.

While the Graduate Studies site contains many awards, only a few are appropriate to architecture students. The main ones are listed below.

Graduate Student Travel Fund
Graduate students are eligible for reimbursement from the Graduate Student Travel Fund once per degree program. The Travel Fund provides travel support to a maximum of $400 per graduate student who presents a paper or poster at an official conference or symposium (student workshops are ineligible)

First Nations Graduate Fellowships
The University of British Columbia offers several fellowships and scholarships to First Nations graduate students. Award winners are selected on the basis of academic merit through an annual competition. The Faculty of Graduate Studies administers the awards in consultation with the First Nations House of Learning. The awards range in value from approximately $5,000 to $10,000.

Rick Hansen "Man in Motion" Fellowships for Disabled Students.
These awards are made available by the University of British Columbia to honour the incredible determination and many personal achievements of Rick Hansen. Two awards of $16,000 are awarded each year to physically disabled students enrolled in a full-time graduate program at UBC. External Awards
Fulbright Scholar Program
Deadline: varies depending on program
Open to: People holding a Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree (including a Master's depending on the field)
Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Since the program’s inception, more than 250,000 participants --chosen for their leadership potential-- have had the opportunity to observe each other’s political, economic and cultural institutions.


The Rotary Club Scholarships
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Today, the program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies.

Opportunities Available for Canadian or Permanent Resident Students only

SSHRC
The Social Sciences and Research Council [SSHRC] provides research funding for graduate students in the Social Sciences and Humanities. If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, have completed or are about to complete a bachelor's degree, or are already pursuing a master's degree in the humanities or social sciences, you may be eligible to apply for a master's scholarship. Work Study Program
The work study program is a wage subsidy program that encourages on-campus employers to create career related work for eligible students. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents in receipt of government student loans during the semester for which they wish to apply. For information on applying to the work study program please review the Career Services web site.


University Bursaries, Awards and Scholarships

Bursaries
Bursaries are non-repayable awards that are allocated primarily on the basis of financial need. Generally, first consideration is given to those applicants who are also in receipt of government student financial assistance (student loans and grants). Opportunities Available for International Students only
Need-based aid for international students is very limited. Canadian government loans and assistance are available only to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
US citizens may be eligible for Stafford or PLUS loans applicable to UBC degree courses.

International Partial Tuition Scholarship
International students are eligible for an International Partial Tuition Scholarship of up to $3,338.08 [subject to change] which is applied to assist with their tuition fees if they are registered full-time in master's programs that assess tuition fees of $7,200 per year.

Employment for international students

Many international students are interested in working or volunteering while they attend UBC. For some students, work experience provides great career preparation, exposure to the Canadian workplace, and a closer connection to the local community. Commonwealth Scholarship
The Government of Canada offers scholarships as part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP). These scholarships are tenable at Canadian universities only. The Canadian Commonwealth Program is designed to provide opportunities for students of other Commonwealth countries to pursue advanced programs in Canada. The Scholarships are intended for men and women of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make a significant contribution to their own countries on their return from study in Canada.

Other Awards
If you are an American student planning to study at UBC, you can access financial assistance through the Stafford Loans and Federal PLUS Loans programs.

There are many other awards open to non-Canadians, among them exchange fellowships negotiated between Canada and many other countries, and awards made available by different countries for study abroad. You should check these out carefully in your own country.
