ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS
The following scholarships are awarded to those entering the Master of Architecture program based on academic excellence and anticipation of high achievement in the program and are made available through the generosity of donors. The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the Admissions Committee. No additional applications are required.
Graduate Student Initiative [GSI] scholarships:
The Architecture Admissions Committee will allocate GSI funding as Entrance Scholarships to a number of incoming graduate students who show excellent academic merit and exceptional promise. All applicants to the Master of Architecture program will automatically be considered for any given year’s GSI award; there is no need to submit an application for a GSI award. Funding may also be awarded to students entering the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture program.
Architecture Entrance Scholarships:
Scholarships are made available by the program to students entering the Master of Architecture Program based primarily on high academic achievement and promise of good success in the program. Amounts range from $1,000 - $5,000.
940. Bunting Coady Entrance Scholarship in Architecture
A scholarship is made available by Bunting Coady Architects to a student entering the Master of Architecture Program or the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture Program, based primarily on his/her scholarly achievements at the undergraduate level. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
942. Bryce Rositch Entrance Award in Architecture
Entrance awards are made available by Bryce Rositch Architect to students entering the Master of Architecture Program or Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture Program, based primarily on their community and global citizenship achievements at the undergraduate level. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
957. Emaar Canada Entrance Scholarship in Architecture
A scholarship is offered annually by Emaar Canada to a student entering the Master of Architecture Program who places within the top ten percent of accepted applicants. Candidates must demonstrate initiative in understanding the practice of architecture in their application materials. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
958. Ledcor Industries Inc. Centenary Scholarship in Architecture
A scholarship has been endowed by Ledcor Industries Inc. for a student entering the Master of Architecture Program or the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture Program. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
962: Busby Cole Entrance Scholarship in Architecture A $1,000 scholarship has been endowed by Peter Busby, Busby Perkins + Will and Dr. Ray Cole, Professor, University of British Columbia, for a student entering the Masters of Architecture program in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. The student must have demonstrated through their past education, work experience or community activities a strong commitment to sustainable design principles and wish to expand on these through their studies in architecture at UBC. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
OTHER GRADUATE AWARDS
A range of awards are available to graduate students through a university-wide competition with a few being particularly appropriate to students in Architecture as noted below. Those with very high first-class academic standing nominated by Architecture faculty for inclusion in the competition may be awarded an award of up to $16,000 CAN. Affiliated awards are awarded on a competitive basis with interest far exceeding available funds. Please see the Architecture office in early September for more information. Pacific Century Graduate Scholarship
The Pacific Century Graduate Scholarships are funded by the Province of British Columbia. These merit-based graduate scholarships are to reward scholarly and research excellence and are available to students in research-intensive graduate programs at both the Master's and Ph.D. levels. Winners of these scholarships will receive $10,000 from the Pacific Century Graduate Scholarship together with additional funding from other University scholarship sources, for a combined total scholarship value of $17,000 per year.
First Nations Graduate Fellowships
The University of British Columbia offers several fellowships and scholarships to First Nations graduate students. Award winners are selected on the basis of academic merit through an annual competition. The Faculty of Graduate studies administers the awards in consultation with the First Nation House of Learning. The awards range in value from approximately $5,000 to $10,000.
Rick Hansen 'Man in Motion' Fellowships for Disabled Students
These awards are made available by the University of British Columbia to honour the incredible determination and many personal achievements of Rick Hansen. Two awards of $16,000 are awarded each year to physically disabled students enrolled in a full-time graduate program at UBC. For detailed information, please refer to the Faculty of Graduate Studies website as noted above.
EXTERNAL AWARDS
AIA Alaska Scholarship
Scholarships are available through AIA Alaska for Alaska residents currently enrolled in an accredited School of Architecture. To be eligible, students must be a permanent resident of the State of Alaska and be enrolled in a master's program in Architecture prior to May 30th of the current calendar year. The scholarship will be awarded based on overall ability, desire, determination and potential for successfully completing their architectural education and entering into Architecture as a profession. Deadline is September 30th of each calendar year. Contact the AIA Alaska office for further information at info@aiaak.org.
AIA West Virginia Scholarship
Scholarships are available through AIA West Virginia for permanent residents of the State of West Virigina who are enrolled in a Master of Architecture program prior to May 30th. Application deadline is May 30th of each calendar year. Further information is available at http://www.aiawv.org/scholarships.cfm.
Cohos Evamy Scholarship in Honour of Michael Evamy
Awarded annually to a Canadian student attending a Canadian School of Architecture who is in the year before his/her final year of study. It is valued at $5,000 and is awarded to fund an architectural research project of study the student chooses. Up to $3,000 is also available for project related expenses including travel. The successful recipient must prepare a presentation for the public and for publication and give a similar presentation at the student's school in September of the following year. Deadline is mid-March of each year. Further information is available at the Cohos Evamy website.
RTKL Travelling Fellowship
The RTKL Travelling Fellowship in the amount of $2500 supports foreign travel undertaken to further educational goals whether as independent foreign travel or as a participant in an established school travel program. Applicants must be in the second-to-last year of a MArch program when applying and complete the travel prior to graduation Application deadline is February 15 of each calendar year with the announcement made in April of the same year. Power Corporation of Canada Award
An annual Power Corporation Award has been established by the Canadian Centre for Architecture to enhance the experience of graduate students at the Master's level in Canada by encouraging their use of the CCA's collection and resources. All students currently enrolled in a professional Master of Architecture or post-professional Master of Architecture within Canada are eligible for this award, regardless of citizenship. The award provides a total stipend of $7,000 CAD to cover travel, housing and living expenses of each recipient for a three month residency in Montreal during June, July and August. Application deadline is 15 March. Further information can be found on the CCA website.
RAIC Urban Design Award
Within the RAIC's Urban Design Awards a 'Student Projects' category has been created for each of the following categories:
. A submission from a structured Urban Design studio
. A submission as a result of an individual thesis
The student category will be administered through participating Canadian Universities' programs in architecture, landscape architecture and/or urban planning. Each School may forward one submission in each category with the nominee's submission due at the RAIC offices by mid-February each year however please confirm deadline with the RAIC office.

Canada Green Building Council Scholarship for Sustainable Design and Research
Established as an RAIC Foundation Award through an endowment from the Canada Green Building Council, the main purpose of the fund is to nurture the next generation of 'green' designers by promoting and encouraging sustainable research and design in Canadian Schools of Architecture. Each Master of Architecture program within Canada may put forward the Master's Thesis proposal they believe to be most promising that year in terms of focus on research or design for a sustainable built-environment. The scholarship will be in the amount of $5,000 with the submission deadline mid to late March of each year. Further information is available on the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada's website.
CONTINUING AND GRADUATING AWARDS
The following awards are made available through the generosity of donors. The awards acknowledge the accomplishments of students in the Master of Architecture and the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture Program and are determined through faculty nomination.
924. Architectural Institute of British Columbia Scholarship
Scholarships are made to students who have high overall academic standing and who have demonstrated significant progress and development in design. A scholarship is awarded to a student in first year with the highest average after one term in the Master of Architecture program. An additional scholarship is awarded to a student entering the final year. Further scholarships are awarded to students in any year.

A prize has been established in memory of Kenny Charow by friends and colleagues.

936. Ray Cole Architecture Scholarship
A scholarship is offered by Busby Perkins + Will for students in architecture, with preference given to students demonstrating commitment to sustainable design principles.

935. Fred B. Dalla-Lana Memorial Scholarship in Architecture
A scholarship has been endowed by the Dalla-Lana family and DGBK Architects in memory of Fred B. Dalla-Lana for students in the Master of Architecture and Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture programs. The scholarship is made available to a student entering second or third year who demonstrates exceptional creative skill in the successive refinement of architectural plans and details.

934. Joyce Lewison and Anne Lewison Travel Scholarship in Architecture
Scholarships have been endowed through a bequest from Rosalind Joyce Lewison, enhanced by an additional gift from her daughter, Anne Lewison, for students in the Master of Architecture program who are participating in the Study Abroad Program.

925. Thompson Berwick Pratt & Partners Scholarship
A scholarship has been endowed by the firm of Hemingway Nelson Architects to a student registered in the Master of Architecture program who is entering the second or third year of the program. Selection of the winner is made within the context of excellence in responsible architectural design. The recipient is required to maintain enrolment in a full program of studies during the year in which the award is held.

947. Chernoff Thompson Science Scholarship in Architecture
Scholarships totalling $1,250 have been endowed by Chernoff Thompson Architects for students entering second or third year of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture with a preference for students in the architecture program who have demonstrated scientific rigor in their architecture studies including structured research and design from "first principles".

956. Beans Justice Memorial Scholarship in Architecture
A scholarship has been endowed by family, friends and colleagues in memory of B. (Beans) Geoffrey Clive Justice, a founding partner in the architectural firm of Downs Archambault & Partners, for a student in the Master of Architecture or Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture Programs. Beans' legacy is a simple one: observe life with a perceptive eye, appreciate the spirit of place, seek beauty and delight in all things natural, let humour prevail. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

938. Werner Forster Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship has been endowed by the Christopher Foundation in memory of architect, Werner Forster, for a student in the Master of Architecture program.

05360. Fast + Epp Scholarship
A scholarship offered by Fast + Epp on a rotating basis for graduate architecture students and undergraduate civil engineering students, with the scholarship being awarded to architecture students in even years and civil engineering students in odd years. For architecture, preference is given to students demonstrating interest and knowledge in structural design.

SSEF Scholarship for Excellence in Steel Design
Scholarships are offered by the Steel Structure Education Foundation, a special initiative of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, to recognize students who demonstrate the creative use of structural steel in the development of his/her design work.

6471. Concord Erickson Energy and Architecture Fellowship
Fellowships have been endowed by Concord Pacific Harmony Trust in honour of the late Arthur Erickson and his life's work in Architecture. The fellowships are awarded to architecture students in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture who are studying or carrying out scholarly research in innovative sustainable design principles which integrate efficient energy consumption and technology with architecture to help reduce the impact of the human footprint on the environment.
944. Arthur Hullah and Dorothy Cleveland Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships have been endowed through a bequest by Dorothy Mae Cleveland for British Columbia residents in Architecture who have demonstrated academic ability and may be in need of financial assistance, with a preference for students who are studying West Coast design or the use of West Coast materials in design application.

Scholarships have been endowed by Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd. for students in the Master of Architecture program with preference for students demonstrating excellence in the area of design integration.

917. Paul Wisnicki Book Prize
A book prize is made available to a second or third year student in the Master of Architecture program who has completed, with good grades, two or more of the current course offerings in the field of building structures and who has demonstrated through work in Architectural design, understanding and imagination in the aspect of architectural form as related to structural demands.

Student Contribution Book Prize
A book prize in recognition of a student who, in the opinion of the faculty, has made a contribution to the School's learning environment.

933. University of B.C. Architecture Alumni Henry Elder Prize
A prize has been endowed by friends and former students of Henry Elder, Director of the School of Architecture from 1961 to 1975, to recognize his inspirational and humanistic qualities which brought a spirit of enquiry and joy in the study of architecture.

A scholarship is offered by Rafii Architects Inc. for a student in architecture, with preference given to students entering their final year of study.

A scholarship is offered by Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden for a student in the Master of Architecture program with preference for a student entering third year who has demonstrated excellence in urban design.

918. Frank Stanzl Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship has been endowed by friends and colleagues in memory of Frank Stanzl, whose energy and sensitivity contributed uniquely to the quality of urban architecture in Vancouver . The award is made available to a student who has completed second year who shows promise in the area of urban design and potential for leadership in the profession of architecture. The award is made on the basis of academic achievement in courses emphasizing urban studies as well as in completed studio projects in urban design.

939. Stantec Scholarship in Architecture
A scholarship is offered by Stantec to an outstanding student in the final year of the Master of Architecture degree. Preference is given to a student with an interest in sustainability who has demonstrated good communication and leadership skills.

A scholarship is offered by CEI Architecture Planning Interiors to a third year student in the Master of Architecture Program who demonstrates exceptional creative skill in the successive refinement of architectural plans and details.

952. Hughes Condon Marler: Architects Scholarship
A scholarship is offered by Hughes Condon Marler: Architects for a student in the Master of Architecture Program with preference for a student entering his/her final year who has demonstrated a strong understanding of architecture as it relates to its regional context at an urban design level.

931. Terry J. Gower Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship, in memory of Terry Gower, who, in his professional career as a B.C. architect, sought to give form and expression appropriate to the regional landscape. The award is made to a student entering second or third year with high standing in design reflecting an interest in regional expression in architecture.

4854. John Gaitanakis Prize in Architecture
A prize has been endowed by Professor John Gaitanakis in the area of sustainable development. The award is offered to a student in the Master of Architecture program for achievement of a design project emphasizing ecological consideration in the urban environment. 946. Vaughn Berg Memorial Prize
A prize for a thesis project that expands beyond the realm of the discipline in architecture and embraces allied disciplines and related practices in arts in a positive and constructive manner. Eligibility: Entering 3rd year MArch or graduating MArch
923. Brissenden Scholarship in Architecture
A scholarship has been made available by Mr. and Mrs. P.R. Brissenden and is awarded to a student in the Master of Architecture program who, in the opinion of the faculty, has demonstrated outstanding initiative and ability, and is preparing to undertake a graduation project in the area of historic building restoration, rehabilitation, or re-use.

927. Abraham Rogatnick Book Prize
A book prize has been endowed to recognize Professor Rogatnick's contribution to the School of Architecture . The award is made to a student graduating from the Master of Architecture program, for a project that most exhibits creative, poetic talent in a design which, if carried out, would most enrich the environment and inspire the spiritual lives of the people using that environment.

Thesis Prize
A book prize in recognition of the student in the Master of Architecture program who has completed the design thesis deemed to be the most outstanding over the past academic year. Eligibility: Graduating MArch
911. Alpha Rho Chi Medal
A medal awarded to the graduating student in Architecture who has shown an ability for leadership, performed willing service for his/her School, and demonstrates promise of professional merit through his/her attitude and personality.

901. Architectural Institute of British Columbia Medal
A medal is awarded to an outstanding student in the graduating class who has demonstrated excellence in academic work as well as in design and who holds the promise of making a contribution to the profession of Architecture.

922. American Institute of Architects Henry Adams Medal
A medal is made available by the American Institute of Architects, to an outstanding student in the graduating class, in each architecture program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board and RAIC.

114. Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Student Medal
This medal is available to a student in the graduating class for the degree of Master of Architecture. The award will be made available to a student who, in the opinion of the faculty, has attained a high proficiency in the course and shows those qualities of character and ability which promise outstanding achievement in the profession. In the determination of standing for this award, the work taken in the final two years will be considered.

943. Merrick Architecture Graduating Prize
A prize has been made available by Merrick Architecture for a student graduating from the Master of Architecture program or the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture program, based on his or her academic achievement in architectural studies.

926. Wolfgang Gerson Scholarship in Architecture
A scholarship has been made available by friends and colleagues of Wolfgang Gerson, who retired after thirty-three years of teaching at both the University of British Columbia and the University of Manitoba Schools of Architecture. The award is made to an outstanding student in the M.A.S.A. program following one term in the program.

Bursaries have been endowed through a bequest by Janet Ross Middleton for students in the second year or higher of the Master of Architecture or Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture programs.

Bursaries are offered by Merrick Architecture to students in need of financial assistance who are enrolled in the Master of Architecture program or the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture program.
