This 3-credit course introduces the student to the concept of technology as it relates to architecture. The concept of a building being comprised of the three systems of structure, enclosure and services is introduced, and building science principles are discussed as they relate to understanding the performance requirements of the building enclosure.
The properties of materials typically used in architectural applications are studied, and their historical and present-day application to various purposes is reviewed. Though there is a focus on North American light wood framing in the course, reference is also made to other building systems based on different materials and techniques.
Class exercises and assignments emphasize the application of the theory, and visits to construction sites will seek to develop an understanding of real situations.
