This studio explores the contemporary garden as a landscape type and a vehicle to learn design skills. Through a site-specific project, the students work with spatial design at the immediate scale of the garden room and explore in greater depth the use of plants, topography and the hard landscape elements to enclose and define space.

Learning objectives:

  • To improve the students’ understanding and design expression of the spatial characteristics and experiential qualities of place;
  • To improve the students’ ability in the areas of functional and experiential programming, spatial adjacency analysis, concept diagramming, verbal and graphic presentation, planting and detailed hard landscape design and conceptual grading.
  • Prerequisite: LARC 501
