Study of Architecture Abroad: UBC Architecture China

The summer studies abroad to China is a 6-credit, 1-month course that facilitates focused research on emergent forms of architecture and urbanism. The course seeks to bring a group of students to Beijing to participate in important research regarding the relationship between development and culture. As architects, to examine the scale and manner in which these forms of city-building is taking place is to directly engage issues of history and cultural heritage, visions of utopia, techniques of rapid construction, issues related to density, sustainability, ephemerality, and more.
The course is conceived of as a research project that takes the greater city of Beijing as its site. As such, the course will comprise of fieldwork, office tours and building visits. A research lab will be the space for production and discussion. A 5-day trip to Shanghai, Suzhou and Nanijng will assist in situating the urban condition as observed in Beijing in relation to other major Chinese cities.
