From the initial formulation of an area of interest made at the time of application to the program, an assembly of coursework is constructed with the aim of facilitating an appropriately precise and sophisticated thesis topic. Students undertake a formal, oral presentation of first their research proposal at the completion of the methodology course and then of a more refined proposed design or written thesis on completing their designated coursework. This public discussion provides a broad critical overview of the work from peers, School faculty and invited guests and it anticipates a refinement of topic and methodology as the thesis research becomes the student’s sole focus. Upon completion of the thesis, subject to agreement of the supervisory committee, a public defense of the thesis work is undertaken.
