PhD Options
While the Landscape Architecture program and the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture do not offer advanced PhD study in Landscape Architecture, opportunities exist to pursue doctoral research directly or to extend the work of the MASLA degree in other academic units within UBC, including the PhD program in the Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate Program.
Prospective PhD applicants, especially those exploring environmental issues, may also wish to consider the PhD program through the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability.
Currently, formal application for doctoral study in Landscape Architecture at UBC must go through one of the two programs above.
If you wish to have a faculty member in Landscape Architecture act as your graduate advisor, please submit the following information (see below) to the attention of the PhD Coordinator, Landscape Architecture Program at larc@sala.ubc.ca The Landscape Architecture Department will only consider your request after a formal PhD application has been submitted to a UBC program.
- Letter of introduction, summarizing your academic and employment background, and explaining why you wish to study at the University of British Columbia. If you have already secured scholarships, fellowships or other funding to help support your studies, please explain this in your letter.
- Statement of Proposed Research (2-5 pages) Include: articulation of your academic goals; outline your proposed research topic and approach; provide some indication why you believe the research is useful or important.
- Proposed research supervisors with a statement explaining why you believe these faculty are the most suitable supervisors. (For the Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate Program, please see the requirement for co-supervisors.)
- Three letters of reference from previous post-secondary faculty who know your academic abilities and character.
- One copy of an unofficial transcript with English translation. (Official transcripts will be submitted to one of the above programs with formal application.)
