AWARDS

 

UBC administers a wide range of programs to recognize students with high academic achievement who are undertaking graduate studies at UBC. These merit-based awards are open to any graduate student regardless of citizenship or visa status. Entrance awards are allocated without application from students.

PRIZES

The CSLA Award of Merit (UBC Award # 754)
An award is presented by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects to the student who best demonstrates overall academic excellence in the program coupled with a demonstrated commitment to the profession. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The Dr. John Wesley Neill Medal and Prize (UBC Award # 752)
A silver medal and a $500 prize is awarded to the top overall graduating student in the MLA Program. The award honours the founder of the program in Landscape Architecture at UBC and is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The Durante Kreuk Prize (UBC Award # 774)
This award is presented to the student with the top graduating design project. The prize awarded on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

B.C. Recreation and Parks Association Prize (UBC Award # 117)
A prize of $300, a gift of the BCRPA, is awarded to the top student in the graduating class. The prize alternates between the Leisure and Sport Management program, B.H.K. degree and the Landscape Architecture program, M.L.A. degree. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The Faculty Book Prize
A major book or series of books is presented to the student who best demonstrates a commitment to fellow students and to the ethics of the design studio environment.

The James Rose Prize
Approximately $500 in US funds is awarded to a student for excellence in garden design. The award is made on the recommendation of the Landscape Architecture Program.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The DMG Award (UBC Award # 776)
This scholarship is awarded to the top all around student entering the final year of their studies in landscape architecture. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Douglas D. Paterson Scholarship (UBC Award # 6348)
A scholarship has been endowed by Douglas D. Paterson for students enrolled in the MLA program. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Will Marsh - Doug Paterson Scholarship (UBC Award # 959)
Scholarships have been endowed by Professors William Marsh and Douglas Paterson for students in the Landscape Architecture Program, with preference for those demonstrating an interest in or whose graduation project focuses on the concerns of rural and small town communities in British Columbia. The awards are made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

The Robillard Scholarship (UBC Award # 753)
The British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects provides an $1,000 award and a BCSLA Student Membership in the memory of Raoul Robillard, to a student entering second year in the Landscape Architecture program who, in the opinion of the faculty, demonstrates excellence in small scale landscape design. Raoul Robillard had a distinguished career as an early landscape architect in British Columbia and was a member of the British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects and a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Paul Sangha Limited Scholarship in Design Excellence (UBC Award # 949)
A scholarship is awarded to a second or third year student who has demonstrated excellence in the design process, conceptual design and design resolution. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

PWL Partnership Scholarship in Landscape Architecture (UBC Award # 948)
A scholarship awarded to a student entering their second or third year in the program. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

HB LANARC Sustainability Award in Landscape Architecture (UBC Award # 960)
An  award is offered by HB Lanarc to a student entering the second or third year in the Landscape Architecture Program. Preference is given to a student who has demonstrated outstanding design creativity and commitment to addressing sustainability, community well-being and resilience issues such as climate change, water management, ecosystem biodiversity, sustainable food systems, resource management and other related issues. The award is made on the recommendation of the Landscape Architecture Program, School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

SHARP & Diamond Ecological Design Scholarship in Landscape Architecture (UBC Award # 953)
A scholarship is offered by Sharp & Diamond Landscape Architecture Inc. The scholarship is awarded to a student entering their final year in the Landscape Architecture Program with a preference for a student who has demonstrated excellence and innovation in sustainable systems. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

OTHER AWARDS

Masuno Travel Award
A travel award endowed by Toshiaki Masuno is offered in alternate years to a student in the Landscape Architecture Program to assist with the study of garden design in Japan. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies to a student interested in Japanese garden design.

American Society of Landscape Architect [ASLA] Awards
Each year the ASLA hosts an awards competition for professional and student awards. A number of student awards are made possible through the ASLA Fund in the categories of research, community service and student collaboration. Full details on eligibility requirements are available on the ASLA website.

Olmsted Scholars Program
Named for Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape architecture, the purpose of the Landscape Architecture Foundation Olmsted Scholars Program is to identify, recognize and support students with exceptional leadership potential who are willing to engage current and critical issues through the use of ideas, influence, communication, service, and leadership, thus advancing sustainable planning and design and fostering human and societal benefits.
Over time, the prestige and publicity associated with the award will also serve to publicize the profession, its significance and opportunities, and help attract inspired and motivated leaders. Given for leadership and vision, the $25,000 Olmsted Scholars Award is intended to be the premier award program for landscape architecture students.  Application deadline is in mid March. http://lafoundation.org/olmsted/Olm_overview.aspx

ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS

The Henry Syd Skinner Entrance Scholarships (UBC Award # 770)
Syd Skinner has endowed the landscape Architecture Program with four (4) entrance scholarships. These are awarded at the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture Program.

Daniel B. QUAYLE Scholarship in Landscape Architecture (UBC Award # 786)
One or more scholarships are offered by the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture through the Daniel B. Quayle Landscape Architecture Endowment Fund to student(s) in the Master of Landscape Architecture program, with preference to students entering first year. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

EXTERNAL AWARDS

Prospective students are advised to contact the Faculty of Graduate Studies (and/or email awards.enquiry@ubc.ca) for more information and application deadlines for a number of external awards and scholarships. Some external awards relevant to landscape architecture are:

Canada Environmental Assessment Research Council Awards
For Canadians or permanent residents of Canada enrolled in full-time graduate programs undertaking supervised research in the area of environmental assessment. Details are announced in December and applications are processed through the Program in January for registered landscape architecture students.

Canadian Association of University Women Professional Fellowships
For female Canadians and landed immigrants pursuing graduate work leading to the practice of a profession. Deadline is in late November.

Graduate Student Travel Fund
The Travel Fund provides one-time travel support to a maximum of $400 per graduate student who presents a paper or poster at an official conference or symposium (student workshops are ineligible). Travel expenses may be reimbursed directly to students or to faculty supervisors if they advanced funds for their students' travel.

The Rotary Foundation Scholarships
Available for ten months of graduate study in a country other than the residence of the applicant. Application is made through the Rotary Club in the district of a student's permanent residence. Deadlines are normally in mid-July.
