Location Room 4a in the basement of the Lasserre Building. Access Available to SALA faculty and students. Code lock to access Room 4 (get code from workshop technician), access to Room 4a restricted to TA or technician. Introduction UBC SALA has a Precix 3 axis CNC which can cut out parts in 2D or mill shapes out of material in 3D. Because the process is subtractive and the machine operates on 3 axes only there can be no undercuts. Anyone interested in using the machine must have read the CNC MANUAL which outlines how the machine works, file preparation, and machine setup procedures. There are very specific file characteristics which are essential for creating toolpaths for the machine. It is also a good idea to show your file to the technician or one of the CNC TA’s before hand to check if it will work. Materials Wood products, plastics Maximum horizontal dimensions of material: 45” x 80” (1143mm x
2032mm). Sizes of up to 48” x 96” can be cut by prior arrangement. Maximum thickness: ~10” (254mm). Maximum thickness for 2d cuts is about 3” (75mm). Availability The CNC machine is available 5 evenings and one afternoon shift of 4 hours each. Fee Fees for CNC time are $10/hour with a $5 minimum charge.
